Why Sun Kissed Girlz?

The other night my husband, daughter Alana, and I were in the kitchen scrolling through magazine subscriptions online. I was trying to find a use for my United Airlines skymiles. This was great for my husband and I because we found about 8 magazine subscriptions that we wanted. But when it came time for Alana to choose hers, the only option was Teen Vogue, and frankly when I went to their website none of the girls looked like Alana. So, I faced my beautiful brown daughter and said "honey, we're going to start our own website for black girls." We had actually talked about it on and off over the years, but something stuck this time. So, we set out to create spaces on the web for black girls ages 8-18 and the moms (and play moms, grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, cousins, etc.) who love them and raise them (Dads, we haven't forgotten about you! More to come!).

So, this is my first post. I am Alana's mom Yanique. Alana is 12 years old and will post her own blog when she gets home from school.

Right now, I just want to know if anyone out there is having the same problem that I am. That is, I can't seem to find LOTS of magazines, books, television shows, and other media with positive images of black girls. I would love to hear from you. And if you have any suggestions for magazines etc., please share. I am sure others could also use the information.

Thanks!

Yanique
